While Miriam was still a preschooler, the family court of Georgia left her in the sole custody of her neglectful mother, an undiagnosed mental case. When bullied at school for her shabby appearance, Miriam stuffed her pain as deep inside herself as possible.

Young Miriam knew three things. First, her parents didn’t want her. Second, her world was filled with abuse and pain. Third, the best way to make a good decision was to do the opposite of what her mother would do.

A traumatic event struck Miriam like a hurricane at age 17 when a rapist stole her virginity. Although her mother tried to force her to end the crisis pregnancy, she made a decision that would enable her to continue to love herself and triumph over tragedy and pain.

Miriam’s perseverance developed early. Despite surviving two murder attempts by age three, she remained ambitious, bright, and caring.

Against the odds, grit and love prevail throughout Miriam’s story. You’ll understand why she loves certain people so much, the simple ways that anyone can help a child, and what it takes to be a survivor.

Cloud People by Rae may tend to be heart-melting at some points, but the message and lessons it teaches are extraordinary. The author focused on a cast of characters that enjoy good development and who are struggling to navigate the battle between good and bad. There are different types of them, but they are equally well-thought-out and crafted and they contribute very well to the plot and to the entire reading experience. Written in the first person singular, the story is instantly appealing and memorable. The dialogues mingled in between help a lot to follow the story along. This book is warm, playful and acutely perceptive. For me, it is one of the books of the year.

Near a River is a true story told in photographs and words about the journey of two young bald eagles. These beautiful young bald eagles learn to fly so they may soar over the storms in their lives. Near a River encourages children to look to their parents for guidance, to enjoy nature, and to enjoy reading.

Near a River also has rare and fantastic pictures of young eagles learning to fly.

Near a River is also a core K-2 reading book. It has word lists at the back of the book for sight words and other words, and most of the words in the book are K-2 sight words.

This is a very simple early reader book. The photographs are wonderful and completely natural in nature. The story is about two young bald eagles who are alone in their nest. They are hungry and want their mom. They also want to learn to fly. When mom comes back, they go on a test flight with her and learn quickly how to fly. A book to interest young readers in nature and bald eagles. There is also a lesson to learn about looking to your parents to teach you. My grandson loved the pictures but is a bit young for the other lessons. There is a wordlist at the back that can be used to reinforce the words. A good book for a grade one classroom library.
